What is the Circular Economy?

What is a circular economy? It’s simply an economic system where there is no waste and all existing resources are continually used. Similar to the way fallen leaves become nutrients for the soil, waste essentially becomes a resource for another process or product, instead of being wasted.

This is in contrast to a linear model, in which we extract resources, produce products and services, and then dispose of waste and pollute in the process. A circular economy, in essence, is more sustainable.

Albatross Designs and the Circular System

Albatross Designs is taking the circular system to heart with their business of making and selling safety razors and blades. Albatross Designs is on a mission to help you eliminate plastic from your shaving routine. Over recent years, shaving has become more disposable, and quite expensive.

An amazing swap you can make to reduce waste in the bathroom is to invest in a safety razor. Albatross Designs has a variety of razor styles, plus safety razor blades and plastic-free shaving soap. You’ll never throw away a razor again!

With the razors available from Albatross Designs, all you’ll need to replace is the stainless steel blade. Metal blades can be recycled, just be sure to check with your municipality to learn how to recycle them properly.

Another option? Albatross Designs has a safety razor blade take back program. With this program, Albatross Designs creates new products with the stainless steel, like their recently launched travel cutlery set!

The Albatross Blade Take Back Program started because not all municipal recycling companies will accept used razor blades. This program fills that gap and supports the circular economy model of cradle-to-cradle, instead of cradle-to-grave. So be sure to mail back your used safety razor blades to Albatross Designs! Hello circular economy!

5 Ways Your Zero Waste Lifestyle Can Support the Circular Economy:

1. Reduce

Reduce your consumption in the first place, which reduces the amount of resources necessary to create the products and services you consume.

2. Reuse

Skip single-use products that are used quickly and then tossed in the trash (like disposable razors or fast fashion). Choose to reuse instead. Whether it’s wearing the same outfit more often or reusing your travel coffee mug and reusable water bottle, reuse as much as possible to avoid waste.

3. Share

Who says you need to buy something new each time you need to use something? Share with your neighbours and friends! Swap, borrow or rent! It’ll save cash and help you connect more with your community and loved ones.

4. Repair

Something broken? Fix it! Or find someone who can fix it. These days it can be cheaper to replace something that to fix it; however, to support a circular economy and reduce waste, the best option is to repair something so you can to extend its useful life.

5. Recycle

Recycling is not the answer, and we know that. However, with take back programs like the one from Albatross Designs, we know that materials will be used again to make something new!
